The book and the exhibition ”The Language of Flowers”, the Nationalmuseum’s contribution to the tercentenary celebrations of Linnaeus’ birth in 2007, show floral images in art from the Renaissance to the present day. The floral images are described from scientific, artistic and symbolical perspectives. The flower still-life, the focal point of this exhibition, developed as an independent genre about 1600 and soon became enormously popular in the Netherlands and Flanders.
The collections of the Nationalmuseum contain a number of works by leading flower painters of the time like Balthasar van der Ast, Ambrosius and Johannes Bosschaert, Jan Breughel, Jan Davidsz. De Heem and others. Included in the exhibition are sketches of flowers as well as glass and ceramic items from the collections with floral motifs. The art of botanical illustration and books devoted to flowers have been borrowed from scientific libraries while museums and collections have loaned paintings and photographs for the exhibition.
