Carl Fredrik Hill (1849–1911) has come to be recognized as one of the most captivating and versatile artists of the late 19th century. After studying at the Academy in Stockholm he went to Paris in the autumn of 1873 where he was influenced by French art of the day while simultaneously developing a highly personal style of landscape painting. After becoming schizophrenic in 1878 Hill continued to be creative right up to his death in 1911. During the period of his illness he produced a large number of very expressive works using different media and these works have inspired numerous artists and authors during the 20th century and on up to the present day.
