Bruno Liljefors made his seminal contributions to the genre of wild life painting in Sweden, so much aware of the Linnaean tradition. He belonged to the generation of painters around 1900 that, inspired by the movement of romantic nationalism, made important discoveries in landscape painting. Being a hunting zoologist, he conceived the animal as an organic part of the Swedish landscape on land and sea. His account of the animals was often dramatic, in the vein of the new theory of evolution, but also reflecting his own psychology, with origins in his early childhood.
