With this volume devoted to the nineteenth century, Pontus Grate brings to a conclusion his survey of the Nationalmuseum's collection of French painting; one of the leading collections outside of France. While the preceding volumes, covering the seventeenth (published 1988) and eighteenth (1994) centuries, were entirely his own work, in the present volume he has collaborated with Per Hedstrom, a scholar from a younger generation. Per Hedstrom has dealt with the impressionist painters, a task for which he is very well qualified after working on the museum's important exhibition of impressionist art held in 2003.
