The sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814) is one of the biggest names in Swedish art. He studied in Stockholm and Paris. He also lived and worked in Rome for eleven years, from 1767 to 1778, where he joined the Neoclassical movement that was at a dynamic stage at the time. New theories about the art of Antiquity were being propagated by historians such Johann Joachim Winckelmann, while the archaeological finds at Herculaneum and Pompeii provided more concrete inspiration. More than anything else, however, it was the company of his artist friends in Rome that brought about Sergel's radical approach. Now was the time to throw off many hundreds of years of prejudiced preconceptions and see the world - and love - with new eyes.
